Saturday, March 21st: Yesterday was the first day of spring. Purple iris blooms in my newsfeed, and I catch myself trying to snap a photo of the Downy woodpecker snacking on the still-budless tree in our backyard.
As dusk falls, we open a window, cram into bed, and lay like sardines craning our necks to hear what we can hear:
The trill of birdsong.
The toddler across the greenspace belting “Into the Unknown” with his mom.
The frantic scratch of cat-chase-squirrel across the back fence.
Today the sun — the sun — screams for us to join its waking bustle.

After sunset, frogs bellow a cacophony of deep croaks, surprising outliers in this arid landscape.
